Current Status

Roundup lawsuits continue to settle for significant awards for cancer claimants. Bayer sells Roundup today. In 2018, Bayer bought Monsanto—Roundup’s prior manufacturer. Since buying Monsanto, Bayer has been eager to settle and resolve the Roundup litigation.

In 2021 and 2022, Bayer paid about $5.95 Billion in settlement awards to plaintiffs across the globe. In 2022 alone, Bayer paid approximately $1.28 Billion in settlement awards. The recent settlements fall within a strategy, where Bayer settles the most dangerous lawsuits and takes the weakest lawsuits to trial. At some point, this strategy will fail if strong claimants refuse to settle.

Roundup cases pose a significant risk to Bayer, and the company will consider settlement offers. Bayer has insisted that Roundup is safe, but courts have rejected that claim: The California-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to reexamine its 2020 finding that glyphosate did not pose a health risk for people exposed to it by any means — on farms, yards or roadsides or as residue left on food crops.

Overview

Monsanto has marketed Roundup as a next-generation weedkiller since 1973. Monsanto told the public that Roundup was safer than table salt. The New York Attorney General forced Monsanto to remove those false advertisements. This early advertising dispute, however, did not stop Roundup for dominating the market for weedkillers across America.

In part because of Roundup’s success, Bayer purchased Monsanto and all of its business divisions—including Roundup. After acquiring Monsanto, Bayer has quickly moved to resolve all Roundup-related litigation. Primarily, Bayer has settled these claims. In 2020, Bayer announced a plan to settle $10 Billion in Roundup claims: Roundup Maker to Pay $10 Billion to Settle Cancer Suits. Since 2020, Bayer has paid out $5.95 Billion in settlement awards to plaintiffs.

The backbone of the Roundup claims arises from studies that link Roundup and its active ingredient—glyphosate—to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a very painful, systemically dangerous form of cancer. Proving this complicated link between Roundup use and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma requires a team of the best trial attorneys and the best expert witnesses. Health Risks

The world’s leading cancer research institute—the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)—has taken a clear position that glyphosate products like Roundup may not be safe for humans:

In March 2015, IARC classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

The studies explain how Roundup causes cancer: Once glyphosate enters into the body, it attacks the body’s cellulor core. At a microscopic level, the glyphosate begins
